Each offers unique opportunities for plant and wildlife observation.

We will hike 3-4 miles on flat trails and rolling hills. We’ll also visit the Nature Center and hopefully view a good array of birds and other wildlife.

Our second outing will be to the International Friendship Gardens in Michigan City.

We will walk through the gardens in forested woodlands and sprawling open spaces. The Italian garden showcases statuary from the Chicago World’s Fair in the 1930s. Lake Lucerne, a spring-fed lake is a quiet home to geese, turtles and herons. The $4 admission fee is well worth it.

Our Third Outing will be to see one of Indiana’s greatest wildlife spectacles at Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area located in Medaryville, Indiana.  Each fall, tens of thousands of sandhill cranes visit Jasper-Pulaski’s shallow marshes. Magnificent, noisy flocks are usually seen at the northern Indiana property from mid-October through mid-December 2014.

This outing will be scheduled after mid-October, when an email will be sent to members. Those who are interested can also check with Nancy McAdams at 574-273-2555 at any time. Check back on this site for more information. Driving time from Notre Dame is about 1 1/2 hours.
