The Outdoor Adventures group will focus on exploring local parks and nature areas: hiking when the weather is warm and cross-country skiing in the snowy months. Join us in 2017-18!
Hiking at Rum Village Nature Center and Park and East Bank Trail (a two-part outing)
Wednesday, September 20, 2017
Our first Outdoor Adventures trip will take us to Rum Village Nature Center on the south side of South Bend just west of Main Street. The Nature Center offers natural history displays and environmental education exhibits for learning about this unique setting. The park is a lovely sanctuary for native trees, plants and animals.
We will be hiking around 2 miles maximum (easy) through a woodland ecosystem. Families are welcome to bring children.
To make our outing a bit more challenging, I would like to add on a couple miles’ walk along the East Bank of the St. Joseph River near Jefferson Blvd. Therefore, after the Nature Center, we will move our cars to the Howard Park area. We’ll finish off our adventure with lunch at The General on Jefferson Blvd. across the street from Howard Park.
You are welcome to do one or both parts of the outing. Those who want to do both parts of the outing, please join me! More details will follow through LND/SMC emails.
The Pumpkin Vine Nature Trail
Friday, October 20, 2017
Our second outing will be a long walk along the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail. The Pumpkinvine Nature Trail is a regional network of trails that connect Elkhart, Goshen, Middlebury and Shipshewana. This area is east of South Bend. The route is for walkers and bike riders only.
We will do an approximately 6-mile walk along the trail and have lunch possibly in Middlebury afterwards. We will meet at Little Flower Catholic Church at 9:30 am and carpool to the trail. The drive to the trail is around 1 hour.
Details will follow in LND/SMC emails.
